Power

Self acceptance is…

I don’t know how you define it cause I too don’t know how to select the right words to explain it. All I know it gives birth to lots of good feelings and emotions.

Accepting something means to be in agreement but self acceptance is an art. It builds someone differently. Who knew accepting you for who you are is a whole process? It takes;words of affirmation, positive thinking, cautious with your speech, embracing hope and loads of faith, happy living among many other attributes.

With this power anything is possible. It’s not magic or a miracle.

Calmness and ability to keep moving are the best things to ever master.

Dark light

Out here trying to shine and in my room, locked behind those doors trying to heal myself.

Not clowning but just different capes for different situations.

Crying is ok but so is laughter.

The journey was rocky but you don’t have to always choose the rocky path so as to have a pity like story.

It’s ok to choose the better option.

SOLAR ENERGY THE NEW GEM

Mkopa solar package

Solar energy is energy produced by converting energy from the sun to electric energy. It is the most reliable and cleanest energy and it is renewable.

In Kenya there are many solar companies that help in availing the necessary tools required to harvest and generate the solar energy and they also educate people on the importance of using it.

In the rural areas electricity has always been a problem and these companies have been encouraged to target these areas as their primary customers. According to the 7th SDG the United Nations aims at availing clean and affordable energy to as many people as possible some of these companies give people these equipments at affordable rates and those who cannot afford them they give them a daily or weekly plan for them to use to pay and still be able to have access to electricity. These companies include, Mkopa solar,d-light etc

These companies also use the social media platforms to set up shops for customers to make purchases making it easier for everyone no matter your geographic location.

The solar energy can be used in the following ways: lighting, power back up, charging phones, pumping water etc

During Covid 19 lockdown many institutions were set to be locked but the essential once like hospitals were running and they adoption of solar back-up plans would have helped even when the powers went off. Schools too were closed and most families can’t afford buying paraffin for lamps or installing electricity in there homes so the owning of solar equipments for solar energy production really helped students keep studying.

THE WAR

A tweet by United Nations (UN) sustainable development recently said,’ the war in #Ukraine is affecting the country heavily but also its neighbors and beyond. Our UN teams are boosting support to authorities to address lower remittances, a spike in fuel and food prices. The #GlobalGoals is our north star to #LeaveNoOneBehind.’

These hashtags have been created to not only update everyone on what is going on on different places of the globe but also participate in making an impact towards seeking for change.

In Kenya there is a hike in petroleum products for a month,15th march to 14th April, in which during this period super petrol and diesel increase by 5 ksh per liter in which the prices are inclusive of the 8% added tax (VAT). After the release of the price changes chat there was and still is a thread (responses) whereby people are sharing their experiences on these changes, for example:
For the past week I have experienced an increase in the public transport fare and whenever you ask why, the response is all the same,’ wameongeza pesa ya mafuta ( they have increased the prices of fuel).

CHEAP ENERGY SOURCE

For years we have been relying on hydro energy which is expensive to most people and not fully reliable since it is prone to rationing where population is high like urban areas and also due to the rapid climatic change we are not sure about its future. The United Nations came up with sustainable goals and access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy is one of them.

Residents in rural areas who keep livestock might benefit from a recent study made in Botswana, ‘ Waste not, want not; meeting rural energy needs and cutting CO2 emissions ’, talks about: Using animal waste to produce gas (biogas) which will be used to cook and for lighting. There are benefits of adopting this kindof energy generation:
Affordable source of energy. In Kenya too this type of energy is being used, biogas as an alternative source of fuel. Lots of researches have been done and are available for anyone to access, 8 months ago NTV posted a clip of an interview hosted by Peter Ngigi on Property focus show which focused on using homemade organic waste to create biogas https://youtu.be/o_jSVVaG8Hc and the interviewee explains on:

1.how to set up a biogas digester

2. How much organic waste is needed

3. Period of time to take before checking/adding waste.

Daraja academy in laikipia County uses biogas to cook for its students and it is a very reliable source of energy. The school has about 100 students and about 20 staff member. The school has many sources of its organic waste; food remains, animals waste( chicken, rabbits, cows).

The students are involved in this process so that they may teach others and also implement it to there home areas.

Reduces the usage of firewood which when burnt it emits smoke which is harmful to our health.Reduces cutting of trees which will help in improving the ecosystem

The use of renewable sources of energy is a goal that most government has for the 2030 vision plan.

FAMILY AND FAMILY

When we grow up we tend to create our ideal family it may or may not consist of your blood relatives.

While living your life, busy with work, school, travels, networking etc. we meet people who bond with us in levels you can not really explain. They fill a space when they are no longer in your life you feel like something is missing, like in a puzzle.

This new family that we create does not only have your age mates. You have a random teacher who always made you feel great and determined in life, your friends’ parents and siblings, some random old guy/lady who helped you in a work environment etc.

Love them but do you show your family love, the family that raised you and was there through your life journey from being a child till now you have a new family of your choice?

Do not replace your blood family but instead merge both your families and have a happy time.

Wedding day WISH

Simple is how I want it. Don’t grace me with all the beauty that will last for few hours then I go back to my natural state.

I wish I could just come with cornrows or matutas and Dera to my own wedding 😂. Have the best time ever with my friends and family… Drink and dance and in the midst just exchange vows then seal the deal and go on with the rave. Just the way the djs sneak in a gospel song in between some riddim or gengetone that is how I want us to sneak in our vows.

No new faces on this day, only close ones who have experienced us just for the vibes to remain at 💯. I don’t want the pressure of trying to meet people’s (I don’t know well) standards.

If only wishes were horses.

WHY NOT?

They say when you have an idea and it gives you butterflies, impliment it. What do you have to loose anyway? When it succeeds you are happy, when it fails you learn.

When you get such an attitude there is nothing blocking your way. Faith and courage is all that matters and the universe will take care of the rest.

I mean,if you long for success you will be attracting things related to success. According to one of my articles, you should imagine it, feel it then receive it.

Trying is better than not doing anything about it.

Make a change.

Unknown

We hardly move on from our past even when you try to forget there is always a part of you that lives in the past, Its mission is to remind you that time.

Sometimes this is not a good thing. You need to embrace the present and make memories out of it.

Music, some people love old school music,it does not matter the genre but music made in the past and others go to an extent that they are to loyal that they can not give the current plays an ear. They are quick to push the next button or mute the advert if it is an online play.

Fear of the unknown they call it but I think it’s the lack of courage to face the unknown. A leap of faith,it is and maybe whatever your soul has been craving for might be that.

Being open minded is a gift that you would never regret possessing.

Think about all that we are enjoying today, all inventions and creations, what if the people who invented them feared trying new things?

Be curious and try to crave for new things, for experiences and also knowledge.

DEMONS

Not the kind that are rebuked by religion but personal demons. I call them that because they eat you up when you are peaceful and quiet then is when they attack.

Remember how people say that past midnight it’s when everything gets real and you kinda have a whole film of how a mess your life is,those are not stories but real life experiences.

I love my bed during the day. I pray that I fall asleep immediately I lay on it at night but on some days, days like today we ain’t escaping.

Sadly you don’t get to choose what nightmare you want to go through cause I would definitely choose the weak ones like why am I becoming fat but instead they choose family, a bullet to my chest, cliche but it gets the work done.

We all have something that weakens us. I am strong but this is the soft spot and not in a good way. Comes with alot of harsh memories and tears. I can persevere friendship cut offs but not family cut offs as much as it happens regularly. Like a diabetic this is a wound that can’t heal easily, might even never heal.

This is the real character developer. You create some traits that help you burry such pains.

Are you a comic fanatic? If you are you might relate to this statement, villains are who they are because of family neglect: either not enough love or care etc.

Are you a villain? How do you slay your demons?

APPRECIATING WOMEN

We are appreciating women by dedicating this article to all women. I would love to share these words extracted from the flawless song by beyonce ft chimamanda ngozi adichie.

We teach girls to shrink themselves
To make themselves smaller
We say to girls
“You can have ambition
But not too much
You should aim to be successful
But not too successful
Otherwise you will threaten the man”
Because I am female
I am expected to aspire to marriage
I am expected to make my life choices
Always keeping in mind that
Marriage is the most important
Now marriage can be a source of
Joy and love and mutual support
But why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage
And we don’t teach boys the same?
We raise girls to see each other as competitors
not for jobs or for accomplishments
which I think can be a good thing
but for the attention of men
we teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings
in the way that boys are
Feminist: the person who believes in the social
Political, and economic equality of the sexes

We all have much to say about the women we are, the women in our lives and around us but all I wish we can do is just appreciate them and show them how important they are.
Every year we celebrate international women’s day and a theme is always allocated for us to all have a purpose and this year’s theme is WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP. The aim is to achieve an equal future in a COVID 19 world. Let’s all join this course and join all women celebrating by tagging #choosetochallenge and #IWD2021.

DEEP INTO IT

They say there should be BALANCE in life for the cycle to be complete. In Chinese they call it the yin and yang: two halves that together complete wholeness. Newton’s third law of motion states, for every action in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction. LOVE and HATE. LIFE and DEATH.

I don’t know how people do it, yes balance cause I feel like to reach a point where you are at a 50/50 in everything you do is hard. The percentages don’t match at all. Whenever you decide to be a social being you forget about yourself. Forget that you need attention but all these catching up; attending events is overwhelming to the mind. On the contrary, when you decide to work on you, love you, care for you, you end up losing ties with your social networks.

We are no longer young. No one tells us what to do. You are responsible for what you do, that’s the sad truth. I know then you didn’t enjoy being told what to do but deep down you wish someone could help. Occasionally, you have a breakdown. Too much is what can explain your state very well? Deep breathes are what you take. We rely on music, vacations, exercise, long drives, walks, poetry, writing, cooking, and dancing etc. to connect with yourself since you feel yourself drifting away.

Quotes, icons are what we use to justify our imbalance. Feeling that if Rihanna is out there looking pretty, still working on her Fenty beauty line and doing music and still looks pretty with some flawless skin then you should also be here busting your a*s forgetting she has people helping her.

Society poisoned and still poisons our minds. You just can’t do you because there is a bar set for you to pass. Your talent is recognizable if you aren’t educated. Like that aren’t enough you should first earn from that certificate so as to be recognized as some influential person. Actually you will be used as a good example/ role model to your juniors.

I just can’t do it, I crush a lot. I push people I love and care about away, wait I care about me. They don’t care unless it’s beneficial. Nicki minaj sang,’ people are going to love you and support you when it’s beneficial’.

Academic highway, Moi university’s fashion runway

Am not sure about you guys but most students invest all, in their outfits. I am not talking about financially only,of course they need the cash to purchase but in addition to all that there is emotions, environment, occasion, company, climatic conditions, trend, what impression to give/statement to display and what they have in their wardrobe.

Most students want to be chic, classic and look like they put an effort in their outfit. No one wants to dress exactly like the other even friends when they purchase the same outfit, each would add something that will be of statement on the outfit to establish their own style.

‘Are my edges well drawn?

I hope my makeup is ok, perfect eyebrows, neat hair, popping earrings.

should i do sneakers or loffers?

tie or no tie?

Is this outfit ok, are the colors matching? Does it look like the one I saw on Pinterest (an app that offers fashion suggestions)?’ these are some of the questions that run in our minds before stepping out of our hostel doors.

The academic highway provides a runway for us to be complimented or criticized by fellow comrades. This street has the realest judges so this is the best platform to showcase your fashion and style skill.

An advice to you all, this street is not for the emotionally weak🌸.

MOI UNIVERSITY DISPENSARY

One of the most important things in a human survival is proper medical care. In Moi University, the dispensary is the major public health institution and it doesn’t look like it. It is located at the far end of school we can say it is just close to ‘mabs’ as to school of biological sciences. Moi university dispensary is such a disappointment as it doesn’t seem to give proper medical attention to its patients as it is expected to. We as students are being charged with medical fee of which we should get adequate treatment but it seems we are only paying for painkillers and condoms. Many cases of inactivity being heard forcing some people to rush over 5km to get emergency treatment.

It was just sometime back that a student was rushed to the institution and we had to lose him because the institution was not operating at night. Apparently it was past service hour. I thought such institutions operated 24/7 to handle such late night emergencies, or is it just my imaginations playing tricks on me? The dispensary, as much as it may be helpful to the eighth of the population, it should improve on its service delivery. This has made the students even though being charged medical fee; seek medical services from town more than 24km no matter the urgency the trust of the dispensary is all lost.

The institution rarely has doctors or any medical practitioners. Most of the time you have to wait for doctor to come in and at times the doctor can take hours to report to work. Surely free things are quite the struggle.

MOI UNIVERSITY RADIO STATION

Moi University radio station (M.U FM), is a project by the university to provide a platform for students practicing media in the institution to showcase ad grow their talent and skills. In addition to this they get to apply and practise what they are taught in school. This radio station is important to the institution as they remind, educate and entertain its audience. They got news and also entertainment forums.

Even though it’s a legitimate station it has a low coverage but also a large one. It cannot be heard by most of the people outside Eldoret but it can be listened to by everyone within Eldoret. This has been a real struggle to them as they want to spread their content to as many people.

Presenters of the station are not only students from school of information science and human resources but also any other school. Students from education such as those pursuing Kiswahili, political science and the rest make their way to host their shows in the radio station. They say information is power yes, why should they put a restriction on people presenting? Some time back they did restrict the information delivery only to media personnel.

A fair thing to all the students, in order to have a show you have to fill a form with your details, the type of show you want to host, the time you want to host it and the reason for hosting the show then you present it to the lecturer in charge of the station for a go ahead. The only disadvantage is that the radio station closes at 6 pm weekdays and it’s never on weekends. Is this fair to the audience? Most times you can say they don’t take the project seriously. The station has many shows with different shows each and every day. We have football analysis, music, news, political discussions, interviews and many more. To be honest this has benefitted many people in the media industry such as reporter Alex Chamwada, Mohammed Ali and many more. They were a product of this school and they were media students. Surely this is a great project to shape our future.

I DON’T BELONG TO ANYONE but EVERYBODY KNOWS ME

Popularity and fame!

To be in people’s mouth in campus is a huge thing and if you are a popularity lover here are some tips on how you can gain fame amongst comrades

1. Tribe’smanship. We preach peace and unity and how tribalism is not good but here you need support of your people. Be fluent in your mother tongue it gives you points. Join your tribe’s club. Be active on the activities.

2. CLUBS. By clubs I don’t mean F2😂 where we all go and have some drinks ,no, I mean social clubs on campus like red Cross, media groups, religious groups, you know them. Volunteer if possible. Initiate activities. Where contribution is required be 1st to pay and if possible pay for others.

3. Be in a relationship. You want to be known so do what campus students do so as to gain popularity amongst campus couples goals. In this relationship act like you are in love in public, go for photoshoots and post your photos on social media platforms. Do things that other couples wish to be you.

4. Dressing. Dress to catch comrades attention. Make these academic streets your fashion runway. Be trendy and not expensive (dressing like celebrities).

5. Money. This is key. We comrades assume that if you are known pocketwise ‘iko nzito'(you have money). You will receive needy calls, people seeking financial support, others will just be in your circle because you have money. You gain nicknames like; mkubwa, mheshimiwa, yule msee. These names come up and stick with how well you give out money and it fades with how stingy or broke you get.

A bonus point. Be ready to be involved in scandals. Comrades test how gangsta you are😂in the name of ‘can you fight for us or against is.’

Welcome to the campus popularity stage and above all study.

JUBILATION AS ELECTION RESULTS ARE OUT

Moi University had conducted its election this morning and now at the end of the day the story changed. Students voted and counting began at 6:30 pm to determine who the lead was and who the tail was. As the counting continued, students remained restless and disturbed. Some had unrealistic egos and some used abusive words. All these were to be expected due to the pressure they all had.

The results were out and this is where the drama unfolds. The fans of the aspirants, who won, such as Brian Denzel Bolo, knew no bounds of their celebration. People shouted as they ran, all sort of noises witnessed and all types of things. New dancing styles I’ve never seen before. Promises were thrown left right in exchange of the demands of the students. Surely, praises can make someone say wonders or rather do wonders.

Some aspirants who lost had to deal with it as some had the pinch since they had spent a lot of money in the campaigns. Some were angry at others as someone once said being famous does not elect you, you have to show people you are worth their votes. Fliers were made some people carried each other while others rode bicycles. Jubilation is always the best part of the election as it is the only time during the whole period you have fun and actually feel proud. This is just a mirror of the society. We as students are creating a small country where we train to become Kenyans who can be accepted by the society after school.

The jubilation swallowed the sorrows as people went to celebrate while drinking. Just a pause, why do people celebrate while drinking? I guess we’ll have to find out soon enough. As a voter and behalf of the voters I am proud to have voted. It’s better to make a mistake you are going to suffer for than letting someone make the same mistake and you’ll also suffer.

NEW ERA DAWNS AS MOI UNIVERSITY ELECTS NEW LEADERS

Right to vote is under the university act which allows students to participate in their democratic rights. Moi University as always is counting hours as they line up to elect their new leaders. On Friday 7th February 2020 the students are lining up in their various voting centers as they vote for their favorite leaders. According to one of the election official, the voting centers were open as early 7 am and were expected to be closed by 6 pm hoping everybody had voted by that time. They hoped for a free, fair and credible election as there were claims of election rigging.

Students were streaming in the voting stations as they were excited for the process. Each kept bragging about their candidates while some tried to lure others to voting for their candidates. The aspirants were also present and voted each one hoping for the best but prepared for the worst as in this race there must be a winner and a looser.  Each of them trying not to campaign in fear of disqualification.

Students lining up to vote

“We hope that the leaders we are electing this time round will always take our interests as the major task and represent us. We do hope so because our student leaders have a tendency of leaning towards the administration’s side after elections”, one student commented. Is this a new dawn for the students? We sure hope so because it seems they are committed to voting. In comparison, this year many students participated in the process as to last year. As the voting continues, students are forming “kamukunjis” as they wait for the process to wind up and the counting to begin. More to follow as events continue to unfold in this institution.

DEGREE HUSTLE IN MOI UNIVERSITY

Moi University is known as one of the best public university in Kenya. It appears in the rankings of the world too but all these seem to cover up the fact that there is something amiss. The institution has a lot of accusations which mostly affect the students. Let’s talk about the endless holidays and elongated study years. One is capable of spending up to six academic years on a four year course. This makes pursuing a degree in this institution seem like starting a learning career. Most may say that all these prepare us for a better future but if this is how the future looks like then I wouldn’t want to be in it. Life in this institution is almost like taking a vacation from reality because of all the struggles going in here while the outside world waits with its surprise.

Missing marks seem to be a major issue in the school making it a living hell to track one’s progress. The administrative iron fist rule seems to be also an issue as they would not make a decision from a consensus from both teams. The students are forced to clear their fees in order to acquire a hostel, no cooking in the hostels and sometimes staying days with black outs. Are we really to keep quiet or do we have a say in the way we are handled? The institution is increasing fees overnight and expects all to be okay.

moi university students graduation ceremony

Lecturers should really do their parts as we also struggle to uphold our end. Some come to class once and you’ll see them at the exams next. They are the same lecturers hurrying to award you with a retake or a Supplementary exam. Some give you exams without even stepping into lecture halls. I’ve witnessed turning some job opportunities down to school delay. Some are forced to defer due school delay. It is said, time waits for no man and when opportunity knocks seize it. How is this possible if school is on the way? It is an endless sea of desperation and depression. The urge of starting and doing something more with your knowledge gets greedier every day. The school should really do something about this issue. Our peers are graduating before us and actually seizing all the job opportunities. This is a job fight and it is only fair if we start the completion all with the same go sign.

Dress up or dress down your mood😜😏

‘Fitting skirt, comfortable shoes, matching earrings and handbag and many more are things that affect your mood’, Halima started. ‘You can dress up or dress down your mood,’she continued. ‘Dressing up your mood means, what you feeling inside is being reflected in your choice of cloth, shoes, accessories and walking style, while dressing down is just dressing with no intentions of letting your mood be a factor in dressing choice.’

‘Whenever I wear pants I don’t feel motivated to conquer the day compared to when I wear a dress’,Sarah reads a statement from one of her Instagram live followers who were following the conversation on fashion weds moods. She had read an article on the same and thought I would be a great conversation starter with the girls.

So we all started to share our thoughts,of course when we girls go out for a drink we always have something to talk about outside how our daily lives are going on.

‘When you see me in bright colored clothes,my mood is at 100%’Mercy says. ‘Skirts and dresses hype my moods’,Antonella said. Mary joins, ‘ Accessories are everything’.

All these are ladies sharing their experiences with fashion marriage to moods.

‘About 60% of people tie their dressing to how they feel at the moment and how you decide to express it in your outfit is a choice, some might want the handbag to make the statement, others their wrist watch etc. It was great sharing this info with you ladies, have a lovely evening, ‘Halima ended the conversation.

Halima is a fashion designer, owns Halims fashion line. She has won awards in the fashion industry.
